Build note workflow using Obsidian and Calibre

For most of self-learning scenes, we need to download specific formatted Ebook as reading materials. And some of us have a habit of taking notes while reading, or are developing this kind of habit. Instead of opening multiple software/windows to do that, we can use Obsidian and Calibre to build our All-in-one note-taking workflow.

For PDF

You can directly open PDF in Obsidian using a plugin called PDF++. You can find it thtough bottom-left corner, click Settings → Community plugins → Community plugins - Browse → Search “PDF++”

After you install and enable this plugin, you can find a bunch of its amazing feats here.

For epub, mobi, azw, etc

Since Obsidian can’t render the epub etc. file as it does to a pdf file, the best way to read the epub ebook in the obsidian is by combining the calibre content server and iframe html. It would be helpful for those who want to take notes from the ebook side by side using obsidian.

  1. The first step would be starting up the content server. For that, go to open calibre - go to preferences - go to sharing over the net - click start server - note down the IP and port[1].
  2. Open obsidian and copy-paste the HTML below.
<iframe src="http://IP:port/" width="550"height="740" border="0" frameborder="0"> </iframe>
  1. Replace the IP and port number.
  2. Go to Preview Mode.

[1] If you can't find the ip and port number, you can go back to the calibre homepage, and click the **Connect/share** button on the top-right.
